Enhancing the lives of clients and communities through sustainable and contextual architecture is David’s goal for each project.
Through a process of observation, research and dialogue, David leads a design process that reflects the unique attributes of each client and landscape. By investigating climate, terrain and culture, architectural designs are infused with regional form and meaning, echoing local traditions, harmonizing with site, and meeting the needs of today’s modern lifestyles.
When David left Seattle for Minnesota, he was 30 years old, and had spent his entire life in the Pacific Northwest. His formative professional years were spent studying wood-based, Pacific Northwest modernism. He learned how to use a transit to survey contours and locate trees to minimize site disturbance. He learned to pay attention to rain patterns, land drainage, sunlight, and local ecologies, and to find inspiration in local vernacular forms. After moving to the Midwest, David learned to design for more extreme weather patterns and different building customs. He found inspiration in Midwest vernaculars, and seek to unlock the lessons they hold in order to apply them to our own time and circumstance.
His goal is to connect people with the land. He believes that protecting the global environment begins by helping people care for the places where they live every day. When done well, architecture is the lens that achieves this goal.
When not sketching on designs and details, David enjoys time at the cabin with family, playing guitar, and enjoying the outdoors hiking, canoeing, climbing and biking.
